Unfortunately, there is a new tree disease that kills beech trees. It is called The Beech Leaf Disease. The disease is caused by a microscopic nematode. The hypothesis is that the disease is wind born.
Beech Leaf disease can be spotted by looking closely at the beech leaves which develop bands. They are leathery to the touch unlike ordinary leaves. These symptoms are less obvious in European beeches.
There is no way to treat forests of beech. Specimen trees in peoples’ yards might be treated. Over a few years the beech trees will die if untreated. Should you wish to treat a particular tree, talk to a licensed forester.
See this website for suggestions on how to treat the disease:

Donation Understandings:
People donating money for memorial trees can specify the name of the person to be memorialized, or can give generally to the Memorial Tree fund.
All Memorial Tree donations received, whether a person to be memorialized is specified or not, will be placed in the Memorial Tree Fund. All people approved by the Town Board to have Memorial Trees planted in their name will have trees planted in their name from money in the Memorial Tree fund. There is not a one-for-one relationship. In other words, people giving are giving to a fund. Trees planted are funded by the fund.
People donating money would not be determining the tree species or location.
Markers are not customarily planned for Memorial trees. Any marker needs to be separately funded and pre-approved by the Town of Woodstock.
If a tree fails, the Town of Woodstock will decide if and when to replace the tree.
Town of Woodstock:
Periodically determine and approve the list of people to have memorial trees planted in their name. Recommended names can come from anybody.
Receive tree donation money. Respond to donors with an acknowledgement Thank You letter.
Fund trees from Memorial Tree Fund.
Maintain list of memorial trees planted: The location, the name of the person memorialized, tree species planted, date of planting. The Town may provide a map on the town website of memorial trees planted.
Maintain status of the Memorial Fund account and names of people still to have trees planted on their behalf, and donor name(s) for each person.
Plant trees in spring or fall. Notify donors when tree(s) for the memorialized person they specified will be planted so they can attend the tree planting if desired.
Maintain planted trees, including once/week in summer months watering trees planted within the last year.
