The New York Association of Towns is alerting municipalities of a nationwide email scam targeting applicants before planning and zoning boards.
How the Scam Works: Scammers obtain applicant and project details from application materials posted on municipal websites. They then send fraudulent emails, often from addresses ending in "@usa.com," demanding payment of fees or escrow deposits via wire transfer. The fake invoices often include municipal logos and accurate project information to appear legitimate.
The Town of Woodstock does not request payments via email links or wire transfer. All fees for planning and zoning board applications must be paid by check at our Town Offices at 45 Comeau Drive, Woodstock, NY 12498. Official Town of Woodstock emails will only come from @woodstockny.gov addresses. If you receive an email requesting payment, contact the Woodstock Town Clerk's office at 845-679-2113 x14 before responding.
