The Woodstock Environmental Commission (WEC) is described in eCode at ecode360.com/4618#4618.
Established by Local Law No. 2 of the year 1978, the Woodstock Environmental Commission consists of seven members appointed by the Woodstock Town Board for staggered terms of two years. The Woodstock Town Board appoints the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of the Commission. The Woodstock Environmental Commission is the successor to the Woodstock Commission for Conservation, which was established by Local Law No. 1 of the year 1972.
The Woodstock Environmental Commission's duties include defining and identifying those areas of the environment that require protection and advising the Town Board when action is needed. The establishment of the Commission was deemed necessary to foster unified action on environmental concerns. The Commission has over the years expanded its interests to include environmental issues that affect the entire Catskill Park. The Commission's goal is to preserve and improve the quality of the natural and human-created environment of the Town on behalf of its present and future inhabitants.
The Woodstock Environmental Commission was instrumental in adopting Local Law No. 1 of the year 1990, the Town of Woodstock Environmental Quality Review Law (TWEQR). This important legislation enables the Town to take a closer look at projects that the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) would permit without review.
The Woodstock Environmental Commission also authored and was involved with the adoption of Local Law No. 2 of the year 1991, the Town of Woodstock Aerial Spraying Law. This law protects Woodstock from unregulated aerial spraying of pesticides.
The Woodstock Environmental Commission welcomes input on environmental matters.

The Town of Woodstock is often referred to as “The Most Famous Small Town in America,” for its cultural history as a haven for the arts, its eponymous (albeit wrongly sited) music festival, and its “Free Love” atmosphere. Located in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, Woodstock is also home to some of region’s most important natural resources, which face threats both from a changing climate and changing demographics and development. At the behest of the Woodstock Environmental Commission, and with the support of the Hudson River Estuary Program of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), a Natural Resources Inventory Working Group (NRIWG) was convened to take inventory of and detail the natural resources of the town in a natural resources inventory (NRI), which identifies valuable environmental assets so that we can better protect them in a changing environment.
The NRI consists of a series of maps, data tables, expository text, and analytical recommendations, which are intended as a tool for the Town Board, the Building Department, the Planning Board, and the Zoning Board of Appeals, as well as other municipal boards, property owners, contractors, conservation groups, and interested members of the public. Its purpose is to help Woodstock better plan future development projects, support future lawmaking, and inform future land-use decisions by identifying sensitive ecological areas, areas which can serve as green infrastructure to support the town in the goal of mitigating the effects of climate change, and also cultural, historical, and recreational resources. Furthermore, by highlighting our truly special ecosystem, its interconnectedness and its vulnerabilities, the NRIWG hopes to inspire members of the public to participate in efforts to properly utilize their own lands and to gain an awareness of the importance of thoughtful interactions with the natural world. To that end, the NRIWG actively sought input from the Woodstock community throughout the process and will continue to present the NRI via educational outreach in the future.
The Town of Woodstock Natural Resources Inventory project was made possible by the generous work of the DEC Hudson River Estuary Program, in partnership with the Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program, and Ulster County Department of the Environment.

The Woodstock Green Guide is a community resource produced by the Woodstock Environmental Commission to complement the Town’s Carbon Neutral Initiative. The resources and topics outlined in this handbook are meant to illustrate the holistic nature of the initiative, and demonstrate that efforts in every regard contribute to our carbon neutral goal.
As this project progresses, the town will be implementing programs in related areas, such as transportation and education. (Illustrated PDF with many useful links; 39 pages, 9.6 Mb.) A printed copy of the Green Guide, at $3.00 per copy, is available at the Office of the Town Clerk Office, 45 Comeau Drive.
The Ask First Resolution, passed by the Woodstock Town Board on April 16, 2019, was created from a partnership between the Woodstock Environmental Commission and the “Rethink Disposables” group, later known as Citizens Concerned About Plastic Pollution (CCAPP).
